BN FAVE: EXTRAORDINARY PAPER PLAYS BEAUTIFULLY NOW
CYBÈLE YOUNG
Art is about change. It is about changing perception, perspective, and form. It is about changing ideas and changing minds. It is about transformation.
Toronto-based artist Cybèle Young recreates miniature versions of ordinary objects into extraordinary wonders. Her medium is Japanese washi paper, a substantial material, traditionally made from gampi, mulberry, and bamboo fibers.
Wa 'Japanese' and shi 'paper', is one of the UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage objects. Sometimes it is vividly colored. Sometimes it is embellished with copperplate etchings or engravings.
Young’s newest New Paper Sculpture series, “Some Changes Were Made,” presents fantastical organic lifeforms.
A tiny set of mustard-hued headphones becomes a curling yellow caterpillar with black polka dots. A miniscule umbrella expands and morphs into a billowing, sky-blue jellyfish.
Young often animates the moving parts of her models in stop-motion film works, to decipher clues to their “fictional histories.”
The images manifest as miniature theatres. Young describes them in her artist’s statement as “one act plays, where shifts of scale and perception occur.”
Young received her degree in sculpture and printmaking at the Ontario College of Art and Design. She exhibited internationally, in both solo and group shows. She has also written and illustrated 8 picture books.
She has received critical acclaim in such publications as Art in America, The New York Times, Wallpaper, and Elle.
Young is represented by Forum Gallery. Her work resides in major collections around the world including in the private homes of collectors such as Ben Stiller, Noah Baumbach, Christian Louboutin, and George Soros.
