WIND ART THAT WILL BLOW YOUR MIND
ANTHONY HOWE
Anthony Howe, an Eastsound, Washington State based painter and sculptor, creates mind-blowing mesmerizing surreal kinetic wind sculptures that are like nothing you’ve likely seen before.
Howe makes metal dance with the wind. He initially designed his wind sculptures using 3D software, first using 3D models then with CAD designs using Rhinoceros 3D.
After years of perfecting this practice, Howe says that he can now create these breathtaking pieces without the help of the 3D modelling program. He now designs all of his pieces in his head, never even sketching them. He visualizes how the wind will dance with his metal.
Howe laser-cuts pieces of metal, using a plasma cutter, before he uses traditional metalwork processes to assemble and craft the full sculptures.
As he makes each sculpture, Howe plays with the curvature of the individual elements to alter the sculpture’s reaction to the wind. More curvature creates faster spins, while less slows the motion of the sculpture down.
Although they are designed to move with changing winds, Howe’s sculptures sometimes having to sustain very strong currents. So Howe overbuilds them. He actually tests his pieces by bolting them to his Ford F-150 truck and driving down the freeway to make sure it spins as it should without mishap.
For Howe, the conclusion of each sculpture provides motivation and ideas to build the next. As each sculpture bends, twists and turns through the wind, the motivation and emotion behind his work beautifully shines through.
