We love to go hiking with our dogs. Watching them scramble over rocks and roots, watching their joy as the leap and run, adds an extra dimension of energy and beauty to our outdoor experience. Beyond the freedom to roam and they exercise, we wonder how they sense and appreciate the their surroundings.

How might dogs feel about the changes autumn brings to their world? While we revel in the beauty of leaves and grasses turning colors and developing new textures, how might our pet dogs experience it, for example? Might they benefit from forest bathing like we humans do?

Austrian photographer Anne Geier shows us how dogs enjoy autumn leaves in her beautiful photo portrait series. She gives us a glimpse into their autumnal souls.

In Geier’s images, we can feel the essence of each animal,  each personality, each canine spirit. Each dog has his own emotions and expressions. Every dog has a different personality.”

We see dogs playing and resting in autumn-colored leaves. We see them curious. We see them deep in thought. We see them frisky. We see them chill. We see their beauty.

The photos are all taken in the countryside of Austria. Golden and scarlet landscapes peering through the mist are especially enchanting.

Geier began taking dog portraits of her first dog Cindy about 8 years ago because she wanted to create images that would memorialize her true spirit. Geier’s photos of Cindy show off the dog’s character – her good nature, calmness, beauty, and faithfulness.

Geier aims to capture the real character and soul of the dog to create a living photo. She gets involved with the dog before each shoot. She shoots at the dog’s eye-level to get more of a peer perspective.

Austria offers Geier inspiring landscapes. She scouts them with own dog Finn ahead of time to plan every shoot.

She shoots during early morning  or evening hours or at the evening to get intense autumn colors. She also favors cloudy days when she can back light.
