GORGEOUS JELLYFISH SCULPTURES: THE ESSENCE OF CLEAR BEAUTY
RICK SATAVA
Jellyfish are the living embodiment of clear beauty. Artist Rick Satava captures their essence with incredible precision and grace in his magnificent glass sculptures.
Satava, a master glassblower from Chico, California, was initially inspired by moon jellyfish when he saw them for the first time, in the 1980’s, during a visit to the Monterey Bay Aquarium, in Montery, CA. As he watched the clear beauties swim, trailing delicate tentacles under their domed bodies, it seemed like art in motion.
The artist was introduced to glassblowing when he was a teenager, in 1969, in a class at Ocean High School in Pacifica, CA.
Satava’s glass jellyfish are so realistic that people often think they're looking at real jellyfish preserved in glass.
Satava uses a centuries-old glass-in-glass technique that involves creating a glass sculpture within a shroud of glass. The inner sculpture is dipped in molten glass to create the effect. Before the shroud cools, it remains malleable, so it can continue to be shaped.
The artist spent 3 years experimenting with the glass-in-glass technique, making it his own. Color was a key focus. And now that he’s mastered it, Satava’s sculptures are especially prized for their unique, vibrant hues.
Satava began selling his sculptures in 1990. Today, Satava’s studio designs and creates about 300 jellyfish sculptures per month. The studio also produces vases and paperweights. No two Satava pieces are ever the same.
You can find Satava's amazing jellyfish sculptures in galleries around the world or you can purchase one yourself right on Satava's website.
