FLUID MOVEMENT CAUGHT IN GLASS IS CLEARLY BEAUTIFUL NOW
Glass art that captures motion appears still molten in sculptures by Rick Eggert and Harry Pollitt. These magical qualities, inspired by master glass artist Dale Chihuly, are what draw us in and we are transfixed by both form and color.
RICK EGGERT
Waves, frozen as they crest, are clearly beautiful sculptures by glass artist Rick Eggert. Capturing motion in fluid tendrils, the blown-glass sculptures are often displayed as groups, playing across a gradation of color and complementary form.
Eggert is inspired by organic shapes and natural elements, leveraging their shapes to give a kinetic illusion -- like fire and water moving. He creates within series, including Waves, Grass, Flames, and Dew Drops.
Eggert uses a glass base that uses high quality sand but is standardized to allow the use of a wide range of colors. All the materials are places in the furnace and heated to 2400 F. Once it cooks it is cooled down to 2100 F, Eggert and his team gather it onto metal rods and create clearly beautiful masterpieces.”
Eggert holds a BFA in glass sculpture from the Rochester Institute of Technology.
Currently, Eggert is Creative Director of the Benzaiten Center for Creative Arts in Lake Worth, Florida, a full service glassworks studio that offers classes, studio rentals, workshops.
You can see more of Eggert’s glass sculptures on his portfolio site.
HARRY POLLITT
Wood was sculptor Harry Pollitt’s first love. He sculpted into sensuous curves, inspired by the hairpin turns and s-curves that thrilled him as he drove cars and motorcycles on highways and country roads.
But when he met a glass artist and watched him cast glass, he pivoted, moving from wood’s heft and opacity to the transparency and fragility of glass.
Completely self-taught, Pollitt creates only 8 kiln cast crystal sculptures per year.
Pollitt starts with a solid block of wax, which he then slowly and meticulously cuts away to create the shapes that will be cast in glass. He hand-sands each cast piece to create a velvety textured surface.
