RARE & BEAUTIFUL SHOWERS CARVE TRACKS LIKE TEARS
When rain showers happen in places where it rarely rains, they create rare beauty.
Uluru, the giant red boulder that juts out of the center of Australia is usually arid. It is the driest place on the continent. It is a sacred Aboriginal site.
Also known as Ayers Rock, the 600 year old rock formation sits within the Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park, a desert with extreme temperature ranges, from 25°F to 114°F.
The area rarely sees clouds. And it only receives about 12” of rain per year. So when it does finally rain on the rock, it produces the most dramatic waterfalls.
The rain cools the rock down, as it streams down its sandstone face, like giant tears, carving grooves as it flows down 300 meters to the ground.
Many of these spectacular photos were taken after the recent rainfall. Only 1% of all tourists ever see rain on the rock.
And the recent rain was even more unusual in its steady downpour. Even so, it only amounted to about 10.2 millimetres, falling within 12 hours.
The rain shower came from a cloud band that had been hanging out over Western Australia for about a week prior.
