BEAUTIFUL FOODSCAPE MADNESS
CARL WARNER
Playing with food is fun, of course, but turning food into fabulous fantasy worlds takes a bit of beautiful madness.
Carl Warner may be a bit mad (in that good way), but he’s also a super-talented genius. The London-based artist, photographer & director creates the most magical beautiful semi-believable fantastic landscapes out of whatever he finds at the market.
Vegetables, fruits, grains, beans, even meat are all Warner’s medium.
It all began with a magic mushroom -- a portobello, to be specific. One day, back in 1999, when Warner was shopping for groceries, he came upon some beautiful portobello mushrooms at the market. He thought they looked kind of like alien trees.
Warner brought mushrooms back to his studio to photograph them and thought they needed some compositional grounding, so he added some rice and beans to the foreground. And a mad landscape concept was born: The Foodscape.
Since then, Warner has created over 100 Foodscapes, both for fine art and commercial purposes.
Warner’s Foodscapes are brilliantly composed. They look like they could be real worlds. They have been compared to artist Giuseppe Arcimboldo’s 16th century portraits of people made out of food .
Each image is comprised of many photographs that are layered together in post-processing. It all takes a team of talented, creative professionals, ranging from artistic food stylists and model makers to expert retouchers.
Beyond creating visual beauty, Warner’s Foodscapes help make the world a more beautiful place. Much of the food used in Warner’s photographs is donated to a homeless shelter.
Warner’s Foodscapes have also been used to promote healthy eating by nutritionists and dietitians to help educate people in schools, health centers, and childhood obesity clinics. They have also been printed on walls as murals in children’s hospitals to encourage appetite and well being.
