TOPAZ TO TREASURE NOW
TOPAZ
Topaz is November’s jewel. Natural topaz shades of orange, brown, and yellow evoke autumnal glow. But topaz colors span a rainbow in pink, blue and violet.
For now, as we think about autumn jewelry, we’re in the mood for the warm and smoky range of topaz gemstones. Imperial topaz, is particularly precious. It was a gemological favorite of 17th century Russian tsars. Traditionally, Imperial topaz is orange with red dichroism, meaning that when you tilt the stone one way it looks orange, tilted another way it can look red. But the “Imperial” designation now includes the pink, peach, lavender and saffron yellow hues.
They’re mined in the vapor cavities of ancient volcanoes. Brazil is where most topaz come from. But beautiful specimens are mined in the mountains of Russia, Afghanistan, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Mexico, Australia, Germany, Czech Republic, Japan, Italy, and the United States. Topaz is Utah’s official state gemstone.
Topaz rocks exceptional clarity. They are beautiful in faceted cuts as well as intaglios and cabochons. Topaz rings grace our fingers with beautiful light. We found a few especially breathtaking topaz rings you can wear right now. Check out our 10 favorites, below.
