INCREDIBLE NEW BEAUTIFUL BUILDINGS BASED ON TREES NOW
TREE CHURCH
The Tree Church, in Ohaupo, New Zealand, is a unique structure made almost entirely out of living trees.
Designed by nurseryman Barry Cox, the Tree Church shows off his exceptional expertise in transplanting mature trees.
Architects, landscapers, and property owners who want to plant trees usually have to settle for younger, smaller specimens because they are much easier to manage.
Not only are mature trees more difficult because they are bigger, heavier, and have more established root systems, they are more likely to be damaged in the move and, therefore, more likely to fail.
Cox developed the Tree Spade, a bespoke machine, that digs established trees out of the ground, without harming them in any way, and relocates them, replanting them with care so they can continue to thrive.
Treelocations, Cox’s company, transplants mature trees, up to 6 meters high, for regional architecture and landscaping clients, enabling them, for the first time, to create instant height, shade and glory.
Cox, who loves to travel to see beautiful churches around the world, was inspired to create the Tree Church, both for its natural tree-based beauty and its spiritual expression.
The Tree Church took 4 years to complete. Trees used in its construction are:
- Alnus Imperialis – Cut Leaf Alder
- Leptospermum – Copper Sheen
- Camelia Black Tie
- Acer Globosum
- Thuja Pyramidalis
The Tree Church, which seats 100 people, is set within 3 acres of extensive shaded gardens. Another leafy feature on the grounds is a spectacular living labyrinth walk, based on the ancient city of Jericho, from 460 BC. It’s a beautiful place to visit.
TREE IN THE HOUSE
I’ve long fantasized about having trees grow inside my house. I’ve dreamt about moss carpets, indoor koi ponds, and flower arrangements that kept growing long after their cut counterparts wilted and dried.
Now, architect Aibek Almassov, of A Masow Architects, has designed a house built around a full-grown tree. And it’s totally tubular!
Really! This tubular structure encloses a mature evergreen tree at its center.
Known as Tree in the House, this is, in essence, an inverted tree house -- one that can fit in an urban setting, although the prototype offers a 360º view of its forest setting.
Almasov first envisioned the Tree House concept when he was a student, inspired by the mountain view from the window of his dorm.
The walls and ceiling will be made of glazed glass. A white staircase spirals around the tree at its core, leading up and down to serve 4 ring-shaped floors, held at bay by view-friendly glass balustrades.
A glass and solar panel manufacturer is now interested in this amazing tree-centered design and construction is about to get underway. The house will be quite eco-friendly.
