BEAUTIFUL DELICIOUS NOW
DINARA KASKO
Shape is a major factor in beauty. While it’s totally true for physical beauty, an argument can be made for conceptual, spiritual, or really any form of beauty.
Architecture is an obvious example of beauty determined by shape. Cake is another.
Ukrainian pastry chef Dinara Kasko creates truly spectacular architectural cakes that look like they belong in a museum gallery --- but we’re glad they can be found elsewhere so we can eat them! Yes, that is a cake in the image above!
Kasko, a former architectural visualizer, began experimenting with design and sculpting techniques using 100% edible materials, including things like sponge cake, chocolate mousse, berry confit, mascarpone, shortcrust dough, and meringue.
Favoring geometric shapes, Kasko uses math to design her cakes, incorporating Voronoi diagrams, triangulation, 3D modeling, and 3D printing to create silicone molds.
The cake designs are rather futuristic, looking like they might belong on a Jetson table, perhaps.
Kasko photographs her beautifully shaped confections as if they were traditional fine art works, against black reflective backgrounds.
Kasko studied at Kharkov University Architecture School in her native Ukraine and worked for 3 years as a designer-visualizer for an architecture design firm in the Netherlands.
Architecture plays a big role in Kasko’s designs. She uses engineering principles in developing the structural integrity of the cakes, creating edible frameworks and scaffolding vs using steel, wood, and concrete.
They do look too beautiful to eat… but go for it! They taste beautiful too!
