GESINE MARWEDEL

You are looking at a human in transition.

German artist Gesine Marwedel’s personal transitions inspire her creative and technical ability to to transform humans into almost anything.

People become landscapes, wild animals, birds, trees, flowers, and more, as Marwedel positions and paints their bodies as she creates living breathing 3D trompe l’oeuils.

Part of Marwedel’s success in creating these visual transitions, from one form to a perceived other, comes from her ability to see potential change.

Part of her success comes from her ability to execute it by configuring bones, flesh, and paint. Part of it comes from her innate abilities to transition from one identity to the next, to the next, and back again.

After finishing school 2005, Marwedel spent time volunteering at an Indian orphanage, which inspired her future studies in creative therapy and "rehabilitation science." She has worked as a speech therapist since 2009 and is now also a trained “ psychoonkologist.”

Marwedel fluidly moves from artist to therapist and back again. As an artist, she began painting on canvas but soon transitioned to painting bodies. 

She can spend up to 12 hours painting each model.

Marwedel’s style is mostly realistic, but with a surreal feel. She works in mixed media on paper -- pastel, chalk, acrylic paints or pencils -- while she uses skin-friendly paints when she paints bodies.
