1. THE BEAUTY: POEMS
Beauty is everywhere. It can be found in everything, if viewed with a certain lens. But that lens is elusive. It is challenging for most people. For Jane Hirschfield, it is the essence of how she views life.
In The Beauty, her monumental book of poetry, Hirshfield shares her special view across a spectrum of experience. One set of poems is self referential, finding beauty within, including "My Skeleton,” “My Corkboard,” “My Species,” “My Weather.”
She expands beyond herself, as she explores universal experiences, such as aging and love. In “Zero Plus Anything Is a World,” Hirshfield endeavors to “add salt to hunger” and “add time to trees,” and in pushing edges like this, finds the emergence of beauty.
Knopf (2015)
2. HEARTSTRINGS: POEMS OF LIFE AND LOVE
Heartstrings: Poems of Life and Love, by Kathryn Carole Ellison, is a collection of poems written for the author’s children, as she navigated the world of single parenthood.
Her Advent Poems began one day, 40 years ago, with a poem each day during the Advent season in December, accompanied by a little trinket or sweet, as a gift to her children. The tradition continues.
Lady Bug Books (2016)
3. WAITING FOR THE PAST: POEMS
Waiting for the Past: Poems, by Les Murray, illustrates a world as experienced in a rural past. Murray grew up on a poor dairy farm in Australia, with a frank connection to nature in its most raw form.
The unadulterated sensations of a sounding whale “spilling salt rain,” or leaves that “tread on the sky,” transport us to his world

4. JOY IS THE THINNEST LAYER
Joy Is the Thinnest Layer, by Gunilla Norris, romances the intimacy of self, while reaching out to encompass the universe. It begs the question of why joy, something we all crave, is so hard to connect with, yet so essential.

5. VOYAGE OF THE SABLE VENUS: AND OTHER POEMS
Winner of the National Book Award, Voyage of the Sable Venus: and Other Poems, by Robin Coste Lewis, takes us on a journey of a black female, centuries and millennia ago, as both a critique and a celebration of triumph of humanity over skin color.
