THE BEAUTIFUL TEXTURES OF PLACE & TIME NOW

THORSTEN SCHEUERMANN
Texture tells a lot about a place, from its history to its potential. In fact, it offers the most intimate view.
Just as places have microclimates and terroirs, with differences, ranging from subtle to surprisingly dramatic, surface patterns become apparent, sometimes from pulling back and taking a long shot, and sometimes from zooming in and observing the texture of tiny structures.
Washington-based photographer Thorsten Scheuermann is obsessed with texture in landscapes, from their vast beauty to their grains of sand.
He crops in on the scene tightly to eliminate any human presence. The effect creates an abstract image, making the texture the star.
As a German expat, living in Kirkland, Washington, Scheuermann has plenty of textural fodder right in his own backyard.
Scheuermann also hikes America's National Parks, searching for his next beautiful shot. For a beautiful textural travel experience, you might just want to follow in his footsteps.
Textural patterns appear everywhere in nature, from sweeping waves in desert sand dunes in Death Valley to cracks in dried blue mud in Oregon's Alvord Desert, from tree bark in Sequoia National Park to ice bubbles in the Columbia River Gorge in Oregon, from molten lava rivulets in Hawaii to the Palo Alto River tendrils.
Beyond his interest in the texture of natural landscapes, Scheuermann is an extremely talented software engineer who creates incredibly realistic textural details for video games. If you check his resume, you will find his deep experience in things like rendering the textural detail of hair.
Scheuermann’s photos sure inspired us to get outside and explore the beautiful textures in our world. We hope it gets you out there too.
