THE ART OF ENERGY CAN ADD BEAUTY TO EVERY PLACE NOW
Designed, with air, water, and light as media, new innovations in clean energy technology are works of art as part of the 2016 Land Art Generator Initiative held in Santa Monica, CA, and LAGI Glasgow. Entries were conceived and executed by multidisciplinary teams from multiple continents. See some beautiful samples below.
AURORA
“Aurora,” a submission to the 2016 Land Art Generator Initiative at Santa Monica, CA, was conceived and designed by Daniel Martin de los Rios and Fran Vilar Navarro, of Rotterdam, The Netherlands.
Offering a dreamy, immersive experience, “Aurora” feels like you were walking through a cloud as you pass through it.
The cloudlike structure is coated with thermochromic paint. It floats above the horizon line, changing its shape, size, and appearance with the direction of the wind and temperature. It produces 30,000 MWh of clean electricity via a tidal turbine, and 100 million liters of drinkable water, via solar distillation, annually.
WIND FOREST
“Wind Forest,” is an artificial forest LAGI Glasgow that serves as a wind energy farm.
It was conceived and designed by Peter Foster Richardson, of ZM Architecture, in Glasgow, in collaboration with Scottish environmental artists Matthew Dalziel and Louise Scullion, of Dalziel + Scullion, and UK-based electrical engineer Ian Nicoll of Qmulus Ltd and Peter Yeadon at Yeadon Space Agency.
The installation contains 100 4 kW single bladeless wind turbines. They stand in 3 groves, painted to complement the surrounding landscape.
WATERGAW
“Watergaw” is a hydropower installation LAGI Glasgow comprised of water-callers and wind-callers. This design was conceived as a result of the collaborative efforts of Glasgow-based ERZ Studio, Scottish artist Alec Finlay, and Berlin-based artist Riccardo Mariano.
“Watergaw” centers around a micro-hydro turbine installation at Monkland Canal and an array of seven small-scale vertical axis wind turbines. A brilliant rainbow, designed by Mariano, hangs in the sky above the water element.
DUNDAS DANDELIONS
“Dundas Dandelions,” was conceived, designed, and executed by teams from Scottish design firms Stallan Brand Architectural Design and Pidgin Perfect, the Glasgow Science Festival, University Glasgow, and California’s M-Rad Architects.
Installed at LAGI Glasgow, “Dundas Dandelions” resembles a white puff of dandelion seeds ready to sail in the wind. It is comprised of a variety of wind turbines, kinetic (torque) generators, and piezoelectric disks that together can produce up to MWh of clean energy each year.
