Explore a whole different kind of musical event at the Asheville Drum Circle. Every Friday, during the warm summer months, Pritchard Park, in Asheville, hosts a drum circle for anyone who wants to beat. It’s a mecca for all kinds of percussionists and their fans.

The circle starts at 6pm most nights, but on particularly beautiful evenings it can be started impromptu almost an hour early as over one hundred drummers take to the circle. This circle provides a great chance for a rainbow of talents to make some music together and connect.

Estate Romana

Now Through September 2013

Rome, Italy

The Estate Romana festival is a collection of festivals and events that all feature Roman and Italian arts. From classical and rock music, to special free admission days, to the world-renowned Vatican museums, you get a taste  it all.

The highlight of the festival is the Isola Del Cinema, an open air theater on Tiber Island, which shows a beautiful collection of Italian and foreign films, including wonderful Kubrick and Hitchock retrospectives.

The festival takes place mostly on Tiber Island and along the banks of the Tiber River. But there are events taking place all over Rome.

The Serpentine Gallery Pavilion

Now Through October 20, 2013

London, United Kingdom

Time to go see the new Pavillion built on the lawn in front of the Serpentine Gallery in Hyde Park, in London. Designed by Japanese architect Sou Fujimoto, the Pavillion is constructed out of 20 mm steel lightweight, semi-transparent poles. It looks like a giant latticed cloud, meant to inspire the union between nature and modern construction.

The Serpentine always presents exceptional exhibitions and performances. Now, the Pavillion itself is an art piece. Witness artists coating the pavillion with LED lights for light shows. Or listen as the structure’s reverberations play an extremely unique concert.

Edinburgh Mela Festival

August 31, 2013 - September 1, 2013

Edinburgh, United Kingdom

The Edinburgh Mela Festival is one of 12 festivals that make up the grand Edinburgh Festival. Mela celebrates the cultural diversity of modern Scotland. Artists from all over the world come here for the world music, dance, theater, film, fashion, food, and fun. They also come here to mix and match. Experience a mind-blowing swirl of different genres, a fusion of traditions, and a melting pot of styles.

Irish fiddles, sitars, synthesizers, and bhangra rhythms blend together to form new sounds. Groove on a ten-piece Cuban band, some Senegalese Afro-beats, Kenyan tribal percussion, Sikh devotional songs, Scottish hip hop, and Indian drumming, all in one jam-packed day.

A similar mixed palette of dance and theater styles yield totally unique performances. This year, in “Star Crossed,” the Mela's major commission for 2013, the Argentinian tango and the Brazilian capoeira meet as competitive star-crossed lovers in a heated performance of Romeo & Juliet.

The 2013 headline act features house artist Orb and Ghanaian drummers Kakatsitsi. How’s that for a special never-before-heard combo!

The Interlocking Music Festival

September 5-8, 2013

Arrington, VA

Another celebration of fusion takes place at a new major festival on the sunny fields of Oak Ridge Farms in Arrington, Virginia. The Interlocking Music Festival is all about interconnections. On each of two main stages, two hour sets run together, seamlessly, and endlessly. It’s like a three-day long mega jam session, without any breaks.

It takes place in a majestic setting, in a forest clearing, on a private 4,800 acre estate. You are welcome to camp there. And it is surrounded by vineyards, wineries, and craft breweries, some one-time contemporaries of Thomas Jefferson.
