NIKON SMALL WORLD COMPETITION

When the tiniest living things get magnified, not just big enough so we can see them but big enough so we can see their magnificence, we see that the world holds far more beauty than we can possibly imagine.

The Nikon Small World Competition features macro photos of the microscopic world. Scientists, artists, researchers, educators & the everyday curious, compete in this annual international photomicrography contest. Their images are astonishing & awe-inspiring, offering us a glimpse into a world that most of us have never seen.

Photomicrographs provide technical information for science, medicine, & industry. They are produced using a range of light microscopy techniques, including phase & interference contrast, polarized light, fluorescence, darkfield, confocal, & deconvolution. Contest entries were judged by an independent panel of experts, based on originality, technical proficiency, value, & visual impact.

Winners include both professionals & hobbyists. Their images are exceptionally beautiful in structure, color, composition, & content. See the top 20 winners on exhibition at these museums & science centers. And check them out below.
