BEAUTIFUL BLACK CELESTIAL NIGHTS NOW
NEIL FOLBERG -- CELESTIAL NIGHTS
Photographer Neil Folberg’s new exhibition, entitled “Celestial Nights,” is a collection of extraordinary black and white photos of nocturnal landscapes, taken in the Sinai and Negev deserts, in Israel.
Folberg has a way of heightening the drama and ancient spiritual mystery of this magical place.
“In these images, Heaven and Earth interlace as the natural world is illuminated by starry skies, a stunning reminder of Earth’s finite fragility and the infinite enigma of the cosmos,” as presented by the artist.
While Folberg is widely known for his color photographs of the landscape and architecture of the Middle East and Mediterranean, Celestial Nights shows his extraordinary mastery of black and white.
The original Celestial Nights series, shot between 1997 and 1999, and released through the Aperture Foundation in 2001, used more primitive technology to create a “digital negative,” from which produced gorgeous silver gelatin prints. Now, using new technology, Folberg has digitally remastered the images to refine them in line with his original vision.
The beautiful blacks in Folberg's night landscapes seem to capture the infinity of space.
These digitally remastered images will be exhibited now for the first time at The Dryansky Gallery as rich archival pigment prints on fine papers.
Folberg studied photography at the University of California, Berkeley. His early photography education was largely informed by a mentorship with Ansel Adams, whom he studied with from 1967–1984. His exceptional treatment of the color black is reminiscent of Adams’ works.
This exhibition marks Bay Area native Folberg’s return to San Francisco after 15 years of living in Israel. "Celestial Nights" will be on view from November 5, 2015 through January 17, 2016. For more info visit Dryansky Gallery site.
