Black food??? It might not seem so wonderful, at first blush…. but… we set out to collect some ideas that will change your attitude. Check out our collection of Beautiful Black recipes, just in time for Halloween, but perfect beyond.

1. BLACK TRUFFLE POPCORN

Turn an ordinary snack into a decadent Black Beauty, with Heather Christo’s Black Truffle Popcorn.

Get recipe here. We love Da Rosario Black Truffle Oil best for this.

2. BLACK SANGRIA

Black Sangria, by Eden Passante, of Sugar and Charm, is a beautiful black take on the classic Spanish wine punch. Blackberries, black plums, black grapes and Apothic Dark wine hang out together in the pitcher until they are all great friends, and then they are ready to party with you and yours.

3. UNI CAVIAR PASTA

One of our favorite black foods, caviar, sits in a mound of little briny jewels atop silken pasta, swirled with uni butter in this genius recipe by Lennard Yeong, of Lennardy. It is a luscious adaptation of master chef Eric Ripert’s Uni Caviar Pasta recipe.

4. SWEET PICKLED BLACK COD

Black cod (aka sablefish) is a firm white-fleshed fish with blackish skin. Delicious in its own right, it was transformed by celebrity chef Nobu Matsuhisa into a revelation. The fish is cured in a marinade of sake, mirin, miso, and sugar, then pan-seared for caramelized salty-sweet silky lushness.

Linda, of Playing with Fire and Water, puts her own beautiful spin on the dish, by using a homemade pickling brine to cure. She tops it with flavor-coordinated flowers Yellow and purple chive blossoms, dianthus petals (which taste of cloves), and sour oxalis leaves

While Linda doesn’t give recipe details, you can find Nobu’s Miso Cod recipe here, adapted from Nobu: The Cookbook. Order your fresh black cod from Seafood Producers Cooperative.

5. BLACK OLIVE TAPENADE PULL APART BREAD

Black Olive Tapenade Pull Apart Bread, by Paola Holthausen, of Cravings In Amsterdam, is a beautiful thing to behold and devour. The classic garlicky black olive spread spirals through tender eggy bread. We can’t stop eating it.

6. HOMEMADE ROOT BEER

Make your own black root beer, either with extract or by steeping sassafras roots. It tastes way better than the commercial kinds. You can top it with a float of vanilla ice cream, or try Mel’s Kitchen Cafe rendition, topped with a float of dry ice, for a Halloween-inspired brew.

7. LICORICE CARAMELS

Whether or not you are a licorice fan, there is a very good chance you will love these Licorice Caramels, by Mel, of Mel’s Kitchen Cafe. They are a brilliant fusion of fragrant funky anise and mellow buttery caramel, salted to perfection. Watch out… they are addictive.

8. BLACK VELVET ROSE CUPCAKES

Black Velvet Rose Cupcakes, by Lora, of Diary of a Mad Hausfrau, are a perfect deep dark Goth treat, both for Halloween or any sultry romantic evening.

The black velvet cupcake recipe is from a Sweetapolita recipe. They are topped with a pillow of blackened Savory Sweet Life chocolate buttercream and black roses, made of homemade marshmallow fondant, edged with a dusting of edible glitter.

9. BLACK AND WHITE HAZELNUT DONUTS

Black and White Hazelnut Donuts, by Nora, of Natural Noshing, are made with extra dark cocoa, not just to make them black, but to give the deep chocolatey lusciousness. With hazelnut flour and extract, these donuts are a sophisticated nod to a childhood favorite, Nutella.

10. HEALTHY STICKY CHOCOLATE FUDGE CAKE

Healthy Sticky Chocolate Fudge Cake, by Izy Hossack, of Top With Cinnamon, did not grab us at first. Its name did not lead us to think “yum!” But we pressed on. And, in fact, it is totally “yum!” -- the healthy sticky stuff, aside. It’s gluten and dairy-free, super-chocolatey, and full of protein.
