NATIVE BEAUTY: DAVE BROSHA PORTRAITS OF GRATITUDE
DAVE BROSHA
We are thankful for the beauty, grace, generosity and strength of Native Americans. We are especially reminded at Thanksgiving time, but we should remember every day.
These indigenous peoples, who lived throughout North America long before Europeans came to conquer and claim their lands and developed cultures and traditions often based on a strong sense of aesthetics. It is evident in their sense of design, both material and spiritual.
Award-winning photographer Dave Brosha captures the beauty of warriors and dancers from the North American Mi’kmaq tribe in a series of photographic portraits, entitled “Warrior: Fire and Ice.”
The Mi'kmaq are a First Nations people indigenous to Canada's Atlantic Provinces and the Gaspé Peninsula of Quebec. Today, they number about 40,000 people. Another 25,000 Mi'kmaq now live in Newfoundland and the northeastern region of Maine.
Brosha, who is based in Prince Edward Island, is on a continual journey to seek out and capture the beauty of this world including its most extreme and pristine environments in the world.
Native Americans developed cultures and traditions often based on a strong sense of aesthetics. It is evident in their sense of design, both material and spiritual.
Brosha, also a Canadian native, has long been fascinated by the ancient Northern lands and indigenous peoples. Nikon considers him to be "One of the most celebrated creative photographers in the world."
Based in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories, Canada, Brosha often photographs people indigenous to Canada’s Maritime Provinces.
Brosha considers these to be spiritual images, as his subject dances in the zone -- in the early morning light. They are steeped in deep appreciation for the unparalleled beauty of this native tribe.
The subject in these photos is Danny Boy Stevens, a Mi’kmaq aboriginal native, from Nova Scotia.
Brosha’s work has appeared online and in print, including at CNN, Canadian Geographic, the Daily Telegraph, National Geographic, and The Today Show, to name a few.
