BEAUTIFUL POOLS AS AN ARTIST’S MEDIUM NOW

GABRIELE VIERTEL

Pools become an artist’s medium, producing stunningly beautiful shapes, patterns, and light plays. Award winning German fine art photographer, Gabriele Viertel, works magic with the medium.

Inspired by her father, an avid filmmaker and amateur photographer, Viertel began taking photos when she was 14 years old, working with his analogue camera to photograph the children of the family. She went on to study technical design.

Viertel has worked in front of the camera too, modeling for Dior, Karl Lagerfeld, and other top designers.

Viertel's images are very painterly, with surreal imagery, and chiaroscuro lighting. Most shots are staged underwater.

The floating fabrics and hair swirls in a kind of organic Art Nouveau style. They are at once beautiful and unsettling.

We know the models are alive and well, yet their underwater pale lighting and otherworldly forms are reminiscent of bodies that have passed on to another realm.

While her “Follow Me to the Depths” series is soft, romantic, intimate, yet wildly free, Viertel has much to carry her through future explorations of beautiful pools.

Viertel's works have been published throughout the world, including features by Vogue Italia, Cosmopolitan, and other fine fashion and art magazines.

Her works of art are in the public collections at the Museum of Modern Art San Francisco and other top museums as well as in many private collections.

Viertel now lives and works in Eindhoven, Netherlands.
