UPWARD SWIRLS: ARI WEINKLE
ARI WEINKLE
It’s exciting to see seminal works, as artists emerge and develop their ideas, their perspectives, their techniques, and their skills. For those who are formally trained, it’s cool to see the work they produce within the first 5 or 10 years of their graduation from art school.
Ari Weinkle, a graduate of Rhode Island School Design (2011), has been interested in art and design his whole life, but began working in the digital realm in high school. His passion for art began even earlier, as he was surrounded by art from an early age.
While Weinkle focused on Graphic Design studies at RISD, his work is multidisciplinary. “In my work, I look to break apart and re-appropriate different forms such as the human figure, geometric and organic shapes, and typography,” Weinkle tells us.
We are especially drawn to Weinke’s two Waves series, Glasswaves and Paintwaves, which both experiment with swirls of color and light.
The waves images are essentially created with “blobs of paint – layered, curled and twisted.”
“Through the process of fragmenting different entities, I am continually searching for new and unique juxtapositions between shapes, colors, and patterns. My work is mostly experimental, often digital, and usually weird.”
Experimentation is a core part of the curriculum at RISD. As one of the first independent colleges of art and design in the US—incorporated on March 22, 1877 as both a school and museum— RISD has always been at the forefront of advanced studio-based education and culture. The school was founded and nurtured by a small group of women more than 40 years before women in America even gained the right to vote.
RISD’s ongoing mission, through its college and museum, is to educate its students and the public in the creation and appreciation of works of art and design, to discover and transmit knowledge and to make lasting contributions to a global society through critical thinking, scholarship and innovation.
Weinkle credits part of his boundary pushing to his experience at school where he had an opportunity to meet and work with many talented people who pushed him to work harder, and inspired him to think differently.
“My inspiration comes from a wide range of sources; I have been particularly affected by Japanese aesthetics, abstract painting, surrealism, and philosophy. I attempt to draw on both visual and non-visual sources throughout my work.”
Beyond this, much of what Weinkle learned at school related to process. He learned was to enter each project without expectation. He learned that it’s better to work and let the process and act of creating/designing lead his decisions.
Check out Weinkle’s video to watch him in action.
Weinkle has won various design awards from AIGA - The Professional Association For Design and Print Design Magazine.
Weinkle is currently Associate Creative Director at Icon Interactive, a cutting-edge digital design and marketing agency, where he works on fascinating design projects, including typography design. We look forward to seeing how Weinkle’s work evolves.
