ARTISTS & WORKS FLOW BEAUTIFULLY NOW
Today, we are featuring artists who have mastered the art of flow, with new works of painting, photography, and sculpture.
MIKE & MADELEINE BÜLOW
Artists Mike and Madeleine Bülow are in a beautiful flow -- on many levels. Their photographic works show their passion for the magnificent dynamics and shapes created by liquids as they flow through space. And, they are married to each other -- their relationship, both personally and professionally, is in constant flow, as ideas, emotions, and nuances transpire between them.
The fluid images are created through a combination of painting and photography.
They have been developing their technique over several years and continue to experiment with methods and materials -- various powders, oil paints, acrylic paints, watercolors, and inks. The artists fling, vibrate, spray and otherwise set these pigments into motion, then capture the flows as it all flies through the air.
It can take 1,000 shots before they get an image they love.
Each painting has its own mood, as defined by the energy and colors in flow. Each piece is unique and can not be reproduced.
Even before he began his visual artistry with flow, Mike worked with the art of flow in sound. He worked for 20 years as a music producer for the Universal, Warner, Sony music labels. Madi has always focused on visual arts. They have been creating beautiful flows together for the past 5 years. Now, they even include their children!
Check out their beautiful flow art works in person at their upcoming exhibitions at P Art Ibiza in Spain and the Agora Gallery in New York. And if you can’t manage that, you can see more on their site and Facebook, Pinterest, and Instagr.am pages. Follow them on twitter.
MARK CHADWICK
Artist Mark Chadwick creates flow with machines.
“With our culture becoming more and more engaged with new technologies, my work questions the implications of handing over control of an artwork to a mechanical device,” Chadwick explains.
He uses machines to explore ideas surrounding authorship, consciousness and interaction as he records their marks and actions on canvas.
“I use machines/technology to allow paintings to make themselves in order to further remove the hand of the artist. Once set in motion I often remove myself from the studio and painting process.”
In his current series of fluid paintings, some paintings are spun or shaken while others rely upon reactions between materials or gravity to allow the painting to self-generate. The paintings are built up of many layers of paint, each creating it's own flowing abstract surface.

MELISSA BORRELL
Artist Melissa Borrell sculpts flows -- with undulating ribbons that loop in voluptuous layers, as if they were soft taffy.
The City of Austin, Texas, commissioned Borrell’s GloWave, an illuminated set of works, for its Art in Public Places TEMPO Project.
It emulates water that flows in Blunn Creek which runs through the park. Segments of GloWave were installed in different sections of the park so viewers could go with their flow as they strolled.
GloWave now flows in separate places, The Bee Cave Sculpture Garden and a private residence, both in Austin.
Borrell started originally as a jewelry designer, then branched into home accessories and sculpture. Her work integrates bold graphic elements with fluid organic shapes inspired by technology and architectural forms. She received an MFA from Rhode Island School of Design.
